Impact resistance according to the IK code
Whether it’s vandalism in vehicles and train stations, accidental knocks and bumps during transport, installation or maintenance or exposure to harsh environments: components and enclosures must withstand these challenges.
But what impact can an enclosure really withstand?
The IK test provides the answer. The impact energy of standardized hammers is used to test the durability of devices and enclosures.
These targeted impact and shock loads on enclosures, control panels or displays simulate real-world use.
We conduct accredited testing in accordance with DIN EN 62262 (VDE 0470-100) / IEC 62262, in compliance with IEC 60068-2-75, using standard-compliant drop weights, pendulums and spring hammers for all IK classes from IK01 to IK11, thereby demonstrating what your enclosure can truly withstand in an emergency.
What are IK audits?
The IK code classifies the mechanical impact resistance of enclosures against external forces.
While the IP rating assesses protection against dust and water, the IK code (IK impact resistance rating) classifies a device’s resistance to defined impact energy delivered by standardized impact bodies.
These tests simulate real-world impact energies caused by blows, kicks, falling objects, gravel, and flying objects such as balls or projectiles.
The IK code ranges from IK01 (0.14 J impact energy) to IK 11 (50 J). The higher the class, the more robust and resistant the product is to external impacts.
IK code and impact energy according to DIN EN 62262 (VDE 0470-100) / IEC 62262 and IEC 60068-2-75
| IK code | Hammer mass [kg] | Impact energy [joules] |
|---|---|---|
| IK01 | 0.25 | 0.14 |
| IK02 | 0.25 | 0.2 |
| IK03 | 0.25 | 0.35 |
| IK04 | 0.25 | 0.5 |
| IK05 | 0.25 | 0.7 |
| IK06 | 0.25 | 1.0 |
| IK07 | 0.5 | 2.0 |
| IK08 | 1.7 | 5.0 |
| IK09 | 5 | 10.0 |
| IK10 | 5 | 20.0 |
| IK11 | 10 | 50.0 |
Typical Areas of Application & Relevance
Mechanical stability plays a crucial role, especially outdoors and in harsh environments:
- Enclosure systems for outdoor installation
—such as lamps, control units, signaling equipment or surveillance systems—must reliably withstand impacts from stones and gravel, tools or deliberate vandalism. - Displays and control units
in public spaces require a high IK rating to ensure vandal-proof operation, e.g. at train stations, bus stops or in elevators. - Charging infrastructure
in the form of charging stations and outlets for electric vehicles and e-bikes must be protected against vandalism. - Devices in industrial applications
such as in open-pit mines, production halls, power plants or outdoor stations, are exposed to heavy mechanical stress and must function reliably.
An IK test provides clarity and safety—for manufacturers, operators, and users alike.
Through testing, you can identify vulnerabilities early on, strengthen confidence in your products and avoid recalls and field failures.
Procedure for IK tests using a falling weight, pendulum or spring hammer
The test follows a standardized and reproducible procedure to ensure objective results:
1. Selection of the test method
Depending on the component geometry, surface and required impact energy, different test equipment is used in accordance with IEC 60068-2-75, e.g.:
- Drop weight (free fall)
- Pendulum impact tester
- Spring hammer for smaller components
2. Preparation of the test specimen
The test specimen is secured in its intended installation position using appropriate fasteners.
It is also possible to condition the test specimens at specific temperatures beforehand, e.g. to simulate winter testing.
3. Test procedure
The prescribed number of impacts is applied to defined target areas such as corners, edges, enclosure surfaces and control elements.
4. Evaluation
After each impact, a visual inspection is performed and if necessary, a functional test according to specifications:
- Is the enclosure deformed?
- Are there any cracks, breaks or chips?
- Do buttons, connections or displays still function?
- In some cases, protection class tests must be performed afterward.
As a result, you will receive proof of your product’s robustness and reliability.
Standards and Quality Assurance
IK tests are conducted in accordance with the following standards:
- DIN EN 62262 / VDE 0470-100
Degrees of protection provided by enclosures for electrical equipment against external mechanical stress (IK code)
- IEC 60068-2-75 - Test Eh: Hammer tests
The tests are performed with:
- Documentation of the test specimens, the test setup and the measuring and testing equipment
- Collection of all measured values
- Meaningful photographic documentation
- Evaluation according to standards or individually defined limit values
As an accredited testing laboratory (DIN EN ISO/IEC 17025), we provide you with globally recognized test reports:
